Support for finding legal, supervised places to sleep out of neighborhoods in the city and throughout the county
(Including emergency shelters, warming centers, RV parks and/or campgrounds) Explanation: Residents with homes are clearly tired of the homeless sleeping in front yards and under swing sets, but we cannot, practically or morally, push them out of neighborhoods unless there is a place for them to go. Our new City Council would do the difficult work of coordinating with the County to set up a variety of well supervised, safe places for homeless residents to sleep in the CIty itself and, potentially, in other places of the County. These short term shelters would work in conjunction with the City and County’s current efforts to provide long term housing for the homeless. Implementation: The City would take the lead in finding locations in the City. Funding would come from a variety of sources including the County. The aforementioned affordable housing tax could assist with funding this effort if needed.
City should provide 24 hour access to ADA accessible bathrooms
Explanation: Until recently, there was nowhere in the City of Santa Cruz to go to bathroom at night. This is both immoral and impractical as it results in human excrement being left in public and private locations, especially downtown. The current Council has provided two porta-potties downtown. Our new Council would expand this program and include ADA accessible and/or permanent bathrooms. Implementation: Majority vote for a minor budget item.
